  • Water Supply System

Melbourne Water controls the water catchments, major storages and the treatment and transfer systems.

Under a Bulk Water Supply Agreement Melbourne Water is responsible for disinfection and water quality to agreed interface points within the supply system.

A dynamic arrangement of pump stations, reservoirs and pressure reducing valves act in unison to provide stable pressures and continuity of supply.

Major reservoirs and tanks are monitored with cameras and all tank hatches are alarmed thus allowing breaches by unauthorised personnel to be easily identified. Emergency response protocols have been developed and implemented in conjunction with the Victorian Police.

A program of regular visual asset security inspection is also in place.

Operations

Water Supply System

The majority of water which is supplied to our customers is sourced from natural catchments and reservoirs such as Thomson and Upper Yarra Reservoirs.

The main reservoirs directly supplying our customers are Silvan Reservoir and Cardinia Reservoir.

Infrastructure - our water supply system consists of:

  • 66 reservoirs and tanks
  • 78 pumping stations
  • 105 pressure reducing stations
  • 8336km of water mains
  • 16 secondary disinfection plants

Water pressure and flows are constantly monitored by a
Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition system. (SCADA)
During normal working hours our System Monitoring and Response Team constantly monitor, analyse and control the system to ensure correct volumes and pressures are maintained. Outside normal working hours our Communications Centre monitors the SCADA system.
Alarms are generated for operation of assets outside normal operational parameters.
